Early Retirement Announcement

South Sydney Rabbitohs backrower Ben Lovett has announced his retirement from rugby league at the age of 23. The decision follows a knee injury sustained in the Rabbitohs’ NSW Cup Grand Final in September 2023, after which he underwent numerous operations and over 18 months of rehabilitation work.

Distinguished Yet Brief Career

Lovett made his NRL debut against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in round four, 2023, going on to play three first-grade matches that season. His contributions to the club were recognized when he won the Club’s Souths Cares award for commitment to community work, the Bob McCarthy Clubperson of the Year award, and was the Rabbitohs’ nominee for the NRL’s Ken Stephen Medal. He had previously won the Club’s Jersey Flegg Player of the Year award in 2021.

Community Impact and Future Role

While sidelined due to injury, Lovett made significant contributions off the field through Souths Care, particularly in regional areas. In the lead-up to the 2025 season, he participated in community visits to Dubbo and other western area centres. During this period, he engaged in regional trips to the North Coast and South Coast, emphasizing how organizations like Souths Care provide opportunities for injured players to remain involved.

Looking Ahead

The Rabbitohs have confirmed that Lovett will transition into a staff role with the club. CEO Blake Solly praised Lovett’s mature decision and expressed delight at keeping him on board in an off-field role. While unable to play this year, Lovett has been involved in coaching the Jersey Flegg side and will continue down that path in 2026.
