Sydney Metro stands as Australia’s largest public transport project, operating as a fully automated rapid transit rail system in Sydney, New South Wales.

Current Progress and Achievements

The system has recently celebrated a monumental milestone with its first year of services, revolutionizing travel for millions of commuters through Sydney’s CBD. Late 2024 saw a major upgrade with the extension from Chatswood to Sydenham, and by late 2025, the Southwest Link between Sydenham and Bankstown will further enhance connectivity, offering services every four minutes during peak hours.

Western Sydney Airport Line Development

Construction of the Western Sydney Airport line has reached a significant milestone, with platform installation underway at six new metro stations. The Bradfield Station platforms are already in place, and the Airport Terminal Station’s island platform is approximately 50% complete. The project has reached its peak construction workforce of 14,000, with 3,000 workers currently on-site. This joint initiative between the Australian and NSW governments will establish a crucial public transport link in Sydney’s greater west, supporting future housing growth and potential rail extensions.

Sydney Metro West Progress

The Sydney Metro West project has achieved a significant milestone with ongoing construction at the Hunter Street Station cavern, the deepest underground structure in Sydney’s CBD. The line will connect multiple key locations including Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD, with a targeted opening date of 2032.
