A Bold Move in the AI Industry

Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI has made an unprecedented $34.5 billion bid for Google’s Chrome browser, with several investors agreeing to back the deal despite the figure exceeding the company’s current valuation.

The company, valued at US$18 billion as of July 2025, recently closed a $500 million funding round that had previously valued it at $14 billion. Notable investors include Jeff Bezos, Tobias Lütke, Nat Friedman, Nvidia, and Databricks.

Strategic Expansion and Innovation

The bid comes in the wake of a significant antitrust ruling against Google, where the U.S. Department of Justice proposed Google divest Chrome after losing the case last year. The judge ruled that Google maintained an illegal monopoly in internet search, and the DOJ views Chrome’s divestment as crucial to stopping Google’s control of this critical search access point.

Perplexity’s growth has been remarkable, with CEO Srinivas revealing at Bloomberg’s Tech Summit 2025 that the company processed 780 million queries in May 2025, achieving over 20% month-over-month growth and handling approximately 30 million queries daily.

Product Innovation and Market Position

The company recently launched Comet, a new browser built from the ground up to serve as a powerful thought partner for web activities. The platform will feature premium data sources and exclusive benefits from leading brands.

However, Perplexity faces increasing competition in the AI search market. Anthropic launched its web search product in March, while OpenAI introduced a search feature within ChatGPT last fall, positioning it to compete with both Perplexity and traditional search engines like Google and Microsoft’s Bing.

Looking Ahead

The company continues to innovate, having launched Deep Research in early 2025, a tool that conducts comprehensive research by performing dozens of searches and analyzing hundreds of sources. The system excels at expert-level tasks across various domains, from finance to marketing and product research.
