Presidential Recognition for a Tireless Advocate
Actor and advocate Michael J. Fox has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his ongoing efforts with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The prestigious award was presented at the White House on January 4, 2025.
A Legacy of Impact
Fox, who launched his foundation in 2000 after publicly disclosing his 1991 diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease at age 29, has transformed the landscape of Parkinson’s research. His foundation has become the largest nonprofit supporting Parkinson’s research, investing more than $2 billion in research and helping achieve significant milestones, including the 2023 discovery of a Parkinson’s biomarker, which can help speed clinical trials and develop new treatments.
Recent Achievements and Recognition
Prior to this honour, Fox received an honorary Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2023, and won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Media Access Awards. He was also named one of Time’s 2024 list of influential people in health.
Continuing Mission
Reflecting on the recognition, Fox penned an opinion piece in USA Today about the community-led effort to drive Parkinson’s research breakthroughs. He remarked that his journey has always been about working with a nationwide community to accelerate research toward better treatments and a cure for Parkinson’s disease, and he’s using this new medal to urge America’s elected leaders to help end Parkinson’s once and for all.
Future Outlook
Parkinson’s remains a fast-growing neurodegenerative disease affecting more than a million Americans, with cases expected to double globally by 2040. Currently, no cure exists for the disease, and its costs amount to $52 billion annually in the U.S. However, through the National Parkinson’s Project, a first-ever federal initiative to support the 1 million Americans with the disease, the U.S. government now has the opportunity to leverage public-private partnerships to achieve better, faster results toward next-generation drugs and a cure.
