A Legacy of Art and Activism
Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez, professionally known as Martin Sheen, is an American actor whose work spans over six decades of television and film. His remarkable career has earned him three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) will honor Sheen with the Daniel Ellsberg Lifetime Achievement Award at its 38th Evening for Peace this September. The recognition celebrates his lifelong commitment to peace, justice, and nuclear disarmament. Throughout his career, Sheen has masterfully balanced acclaimed acting roles in film and television—including Apocalypse Now and The West Wing—with a deep dedication to activism. His commitment to social causes has led to more than 60 arrests during nonviolent protests against nuclear weapons, climate inaction, and social injustice.
Recent Achievements and Upcoming Events
The actor is set to make a rare public appearance at the MSNBCLIVE ’25: This Is Who We Are event on October 11 in New York City, where he will join Nicolle Wallace for a live taping of her The Best People podcast at Hammerstein Ballroom. The event will feature appearances from notable MSNBC personalities including Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Lawrence O’Donnell, Jen Psaki, and Ali Velshi.
A Life Dedicated to Change
With a strong belief in nonviolence, Sheen has been a leading voice for nuclear disarmament. His activism has included participation in protests at the Nevada Test Site, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Vandenberg Air Force Base, and other nuclear weapons facilities, often engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience. His commitment has resulted in more than 60 arrests in connection with peace demonstrations.
In recognition of his public service and moral leadership, Sheen has received several honorary degrees, including from the University of Notre Dame and Loyola Marymount University. He was also named a recipient of the Laetare Medal—Notre Dame’s highest honor—for his commitment to faith and justice.
