Breaking News: British Royal Family Mourns Loss of Beloved Duchess

The Duchess of Kent, one of Britain’s most beloved royals, died on Thursday night at age 92, surrounded by close family at Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace announced Friday.

A Life of Service and Musical Passion

Katharine was the wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and was best known for her appearances at Wimbledon, where she presented the Ladies’ Singles Trophy for many years. She was also a passionate musician, music teacher and advocate for children and young people’s welfare.

In 2002, the Duchess made headlines when she stepped away from royal duties and dispensed with her HRH title, famously telling the BBC, “Call me Katharine.” She went on to spend 13 years as a music teacher at the Wansbeck Primary School in Hull, where she was simply known as “Mrs Kent.”

Legacy of Compassion and Innovation

During her teaching career, the Duchess witnessed firsthand how musically gifted children were being held back from pursuing careers in music due to financial instability and limited guidance. This led her to co-found the charity Future Talent in 2004, which creates opportunities for young musicians across the UK.

Her humanitarian work extended globally, as she travelled the world for UNICEF and VSO, highlighting specific areas of deprivation. In 1999, she visited Cambodia, Macedonia and Nepal. The Duchess also served as President of NCH Action For Children and Macmillan Cancer Relief, and chaired the London Committee of the Manchester Christie Hospital Appeal.

A Historic Figure in the Royal Family

The Duchess made history when she converted to Roman Catholicism in 1994, becoming the first British royal to do so since King Charles II in 1685, going against an early 18th century law forbidding members of the monarchy from becoming Catholic.

The Prince and Princess of Wales said the duchess “will be a much missed member of the family” and praised her tireless work supporting various causes, particularly through her love of music. The King has approved a period of royal mourning to take place until the day of her funeral.
