Hurricane Room: Kim Sherwood’s Latest Addition to the James Bond Literary Universe

A New Chapter in the Bond Universe
The next installment in Kim Sherwood’s James Bond series has been confirmed as ‘Hurricane Room’, as announced by the author, Harper Fiction, and Ian Fleming publications.
The title draws inspiration from Fleming’s ‘From Russia With Love’, referencing Bond’s mental state during extreme situations: “Bond went to his hurricane room only when the situation was beyond his control and no other possible action could be taken…”
The Evolution of the Series
Sherwood’s series has introduced a fresh perspective to the Bond universe, focusing on new Double O agents including Sid Bashir (009), Joseph Dryden (004), Johanna Hardwood (003), and Conrad Harthrop-Vane (000), while James Bond himself has been missing and presumed dead.
The series brings unprecedented diversity to the franchise, featuring characters like Sid Bashir of Indian ancestry, Joseph Dryden, a gay Black man, and Johanna Harwood, named after the screenwriter of the first two James Bond films.
What’s Next for the Series
The series began with ‘Double or Nothing’ (2022) and ‘A Spy Like Me’ (2024), with the latter ending on a dramatic cliffhanger as agent 003, Johanna Harwood, finally located Bond, only to face an unexpected confrontation.
Sherwood has cleverly maintained connections to Fleming’s original work, transporting Bond’s classic biography into the 21st century. The series includes references to original novels and short stories, including the introduction of a new sniper character called “Trigger,” reimagined from “The Living Daylights.”
Innovation in the Bond Legacy
As Sherwood explains, “What I’m doing I think is a structural shift where I’m turning it into an ensemble cast.” This marks a departure from Fleming’s traditional approach, where “Bond was a kind of medieval knight… given a mission and sets out from the castle… always on his own,” despite being part of a larger Double O section.
Fans can look forward to the trilogy’s conclusion, which promises to finally reveal James Bond’s fate and his role in this reimagined universe.
