A Landmark Achievement for Australian Manufacturing

In a groundbreaking development, Hofmann Engineering has become the first Australian business to receive approval to provide parts for strategic US naval assets, achieved through a WA Government-supported program.

Company Background and Growth

Founded in a Perth backyard in 1969 by Munich-born brothers Johann and Erich Hofmann, the company has evolved into a third-generation family business providing specialist engineering services to Australia’s industry leaders. Today, the company employs approximately 550 people across seven manufacturing facilities in Australia, Canada, Chile and Peru, with additional offices in China and India.

Expanding Capabilities and Recent Developments

The company has established its reputation through the production of precision tools, valves and pumps, bearings, food packaging and aerospace parts, with recent focus shifting to gearing for mineral processing plants and wind turbines. The company’s latest achievement was supported by $300,000 in WA Government funding provided to Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) for the Supplier Capability Uplift Program, which was later incorporated into the Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification (AUSSQ) program.

Strategic Importance and Future Outlook

According to Western Australia Defence Industries Minister Paul Papalia, this development aligns with the state’s ambition to establish its defence sector as the second-largest industry after mining, creating generational jobs and diversifying the economy. The minister emphasized that WA’s defence industry possesses the expertise to strengthen Australia’s strategic partnership with the US.

The company maintains a strong focus on research and development, considering it crucial for business growth. Recognizing that people are their greatest asset, Hofmann Engineering emphasizes staff training and personal development as vital elements in maintaining their industry leadership position.
