Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell AO has stepped down from her role as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University (ANU), a position she held from January 1, 2024, until September 10, 2025.

Challenging Period of Leadership

During her tenure, Bell faced significant challenges, including major budget issues that led to proposals for cutting $250m from the ANU’s cost base. In October 2024, she announced a substantial restructure of the university and projected a deficit exceeding $200m. The restructuring plan included the controversial closure of the ANU College of Health and Medicine, and Bell faced criticism for her communication approach, particularly regarding her use of a one-way video link for the announcement. The situation was further complicated by her request for staff to forgo a scheduled 2.5% pay increase.

Her current work focuses on building a new branch of engineering to effectively and ethically manage the impact of artificial intelligence on humanity through improved design and technology management.

Bell’s enduring message about technology’s role in society remains particularly relevant: she has consistently warned that the rise of data won’t automatically make society more democratic or equitable unless we consciously redesign social structures. As she notably stated, “Every new technology cleaves to the same lines of inequity as the previous one did and often reinforces them unless you choose to intervene.”
