A massive military display unfolded in Beijing on Wednesday as China commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, featuring tanks, state-of-the-art aircraft, and synchronized troops. The event gained particular attention when former Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was spotted shaking hands with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, alongside controversial figures including North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Political Backlash

While Andrews attended in a private capacity, his presence has sparked intense debate. The event drew over 50,000 spectators, with Putin and Kim – both considered pariahs in the West due to the Ukraine war and nuclear ambitions – featured as guests of honour.

The Coalition raised serious concerns about Andrews’ attendance, particularly given Australia’s ambassador to China’s absence. Opposition Leader Sussan Ley demanded explanations for his presence at a military parade alongside Vladimir Putin, while Opposition home affairs spokesperson Andrew Hastie described the event as a “parade for dictators.”

Andrews’ appearance follows a pattern of engagement with China, having visited the country seven times during his premiership. His government had previously signed up to China’s controversial Belt and Road Initiative, which was later cancelled by the federal government.

The parade, designed to showcase China’s military might and diplomatic influence, came amid strained relations with the United States. During the event, Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the crowd, warning that “mankind is faced with the choice of peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero-sum.”

Defence and Criticism

Victoria’s government minister, Vicki Ward, defended Andrews’ attendance, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic ties. She stated that Andrews attended as a private individual, making his own choices, and emphasized the importance of maintaining healthy relationships with regional countries for both economic and social interests.
