Continental Basketball Championship Returns

FIBA EuroBasket, the continent’s flagship basketball event featuring 24 teams, will be co-hosted by four nations with group stage matches in Riga (Latvia), Tampere (Finland), Limassol (Cyprus), and Katowice (Poland). The Final Phase will be played in the Latvian capital.

The tournament runs from August 27 to September 14, 2025, featuring 76 games and showcasing an impressive lineup of NBA talent, including Luka Doncic (Slovenia), Nikola Jokic (Serbia), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Kristaps Porzingis (Latvia), Lauri Markkanen (Finland), and Franz Wagner (Germany). The championship will conclude just two weeks before NBA training camps open.

Tournament Format and Structure

The competition format sees teams divided into four groups of six teams each. The Group Phase follows a round-robin format where each team plays against all other teams in their group once. The top four teams from each group will advance to the Final Phase in Riga, beginning with the Round of 16.

This year’s tournament marks a historic moment as co-host Cyprus will make their EuroBasket debut. Portugal returns after a fourteen-year absence, having last appeared in 2011, while Sweden progresses to the finals for the first time since 2013. Co-host Latvia and Iceland will also return after missing the 2022 edition.

Championship Contenders

EuroBasket 2025 is expected to be one of the most competitive tournaments in recent history, with several teams vying for the championship. Serbia, Germany, France, Spain, and Latvia are all ranked among the top 10 in the FIBA World Ranking, while Lithuania, Greece, and Türkiye also boast strong rosters. Spain enters as the defending champions, having secured their fourth title by defeating France in the 2022 final in Berlin.
