EuroBasket 2025: European Basketball’s Flagship Tournament Returns with Multi-Nation Hosting Format

A New Chapter in European Basketball
The 42nd edition of EuroBasket, Europe’s premier basketball championship organized by FIBA Europe, is set to take place from August 27 to September 14, 2025, with four nations sharing hosting duties: Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia.
This tournament marks a return to its traditional four-year cycle, following the previous edition’s postponement to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tournament Structure and Innovation
The tournament features a unique visual identity developed in collaboration with the four host cities—Limassol, Tampere, Katowice, and Riga—each represented through distinct color combinations within the tournament’s broader visual identity.
Games will be played across the four host countries, with the Final Phase and championship game scheduled to take place at Arena Riga in Latvia. Each team will participate in five group play games before advancing to the single-elimination round of 16.
Qualification and Notable Developments
Forty teams participated in the qualification process, including the four co-hosts. Notably, Croatia missed out on qualification for the first time in their history, while Ukraine failed to progress for the first time since 2009.
As the group stage enters its decisive phase, teams are intensely competing for top-four finishes in their groups to secure spots in the knockout rounds. The group play concludes on September 4, with the Round of 16 beginning on September 6.
Championship Implications
While this tournament stands independently from Olympic qualifying, it holds significant importance for future international competitions. The 24 participating teams have automatically qualified for the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifying rounds, which will play a role in determining the teams for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
