The beloved Downton Abbey franchise is preparing for its final curtain call with ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,’ set to premiere this autumn. The exciting news was first confirmed by actress Imelda Staunton, who plays Lady Maud Bagshaw, in March of 2024.

The final installment brings the Crawleys into the 1930s, where “they must embrace change, and welcome a new chapter.” The film features Paul Giamatti returning as Harold Levinson, brother to Cora, Countess of Grantham, alongside most of the original cast. At its heart, the Downton Abbey story has always been about how the Crawleys face change.

A Star-Studded Farewell

The grand premiere took place on September 3rd at London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, with creator Julian Fellowes joining an impressive ensemble including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Robert James-Collier, Sophie McShera, Phyllis Logan, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Dominic West, Joely Richardson, and many others.

The Story Continues

The narrative opens in 1930, with both upper-crust and servant-class residents of Downton attending a performance of Coward’s operetta Bitter Sweet in London’s West End. The plot thickens when Robert, Cora, and Mary attend a high-society ball, revealing brewing troubles.

The film introduces Alessandro Nivola as the dashing Gus Sambrook, a friend to Harold Levinson and Cora, who might hold the key to Downton Abbey’s financial salvation. While his story resolves quickly, Nivola perfectly captures the mix of soapiness and sincerity that defines Fellowes’ writing. Paul Giamatti’s return as Harold Levinson adds both dramatic weight and comedic touches to the narrative.

A Lasting Legacy

Having premiered in 2010, Downton Abbey evolved into a global phenomenon, spanning 6 seasons and three feature films. True to its title, ‘The Grand Finale’ works hard to provide closure to fans for their 14 years of devotion. The film features nostalgic moments, including haunting images from the series’ past, particularly honoring Maggie Smith’s indelible character, whose portrait looms over the proceedings.
