Iconic Outback Events Shape Birdsville’s Future

With a permanent population of just 110 people, Birdsville has established itself as a popular tourist destination, particularly for those seeking to explore the Simpson Desert.

The 143rd Birdsville Races are set to return this September, running from Wednesday 3rd to Sunday 7th, with official race days scheduled for Friday 5th and Saturday 6th September. The event traditionally transforms this remote town from its usual population of around 100 locals into a buzzing hub of more than 6,000 visitors.

Record Nominations and Economic Impact

This year’s races have attracted nominations from across Australia, including Darwin in the NT, Nyngan and Forbes in NSW, Wangaratta in Victoria, and numerous Queensland locations including Mount Isa, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, and various central west locations. The surge in participation has been attributed to a 10% increase in prize money, with organisers noting the strongest trainer turnout in recent years.

The event carries particular significance this year, providing crucial economic support to regional tourism following recent floods across outback Queensland. With many landowners still recovering from stock losses, the influx of visitors is expected to provide vital economic support to the region.

Infrastructure and Access Updates

There’s positive news for travellers planning to attend, as recent floodwaters have subsided and more access routes into Birdsville are now open. The Birdsville Development Road from Windorah is now navigable by 4WDs, and the Diamantina Bridge has reopened. All major routes are expected to be fully operational by the time the races commence.

In related news, the Birdsville Big Red Bash, known as the world’s most remote music festival, will be taking a strategic break in 2025 after 11 massive years of building their mini desert city from scratch. The event is scheduled to return refreshed on July 7th-9th, 2026.
