Leadership Transition at ANZ

ANZ Group has announced that Nuno Matos will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer on July 3, 2025, succeeding Shayne Elliott, who is retiring after nine years at the helm.

Distinguished Banking Career

Matos brings more than three decades of experience across retail, commercial, and wholesale banking to his new role. His most recent position was CEO of Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC, where he led a workforce of 87,000 employees serving approximately 40 million customers across 35 markets.

His impressive career at HSBC began in 2015 after leaving Santander, where he served as Global Head of Consumer in the Retail and Commercial Division. At HSBC, he held several senior positions, including CEO of HSBC Bank plc and HSBC Europe, where he led the transformation of European operations. He also served as CEO of HSBC Mexico and Regional Head of Retail Banking in Latin America.

Strategic Vision for ANZ

Matos’s appointment comes at a crucial time as ANZ prepares to scale the migration of customers, including those from Suncorp Bank, to ANZ Plus. His experience in bank business, risk, and technology transformations is expected to be particularly valuable in this transition. The bank is currently in a strong position, and this orderly leadership change aims to ensure continued success for customers, shareholders, and staff.

Future Outlook

In accepting the role, Matos expressed his admiration for ANZ and acknowledged the bank’s unique competitive position with two scale domestic markets, a leading Institutional banking franchise, and world-class platforms in ANZ Plus and ANZ Transactive. As the 57-year-old Portuguese banker prepares to take the reins, there are expectations that he might implement significant changes to enhance the Melbourne-based lender’s reputation.
