Banking Veteran Nuno Matos Begins New Chapter as ANZ Chief Executive
Early Transition to Leadership
Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) has announced an accelerated leadership transition, with Nuno Matos set to assume the role of CEO on May 12, earlier than the initially planned July 3 date. This advancement comes after Matos completed his previous responsibilities ahead of schedule.
Distinguished Banking Career
Matos, 57, brings an impressive track record to ANZ, having most recently served as CEO of Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC, where he led a massive operation of 87,000 employees serving approximately 40 million customers across 35 markets.
His career includes significant positions at major financial institutions, including Santander as Global Head of Consumer in its Retail and Commercial Division. At HSBC, he held several key leadership roles, including CEO of HSBC Bank plc and HSBC Europe, where he spearheaded the transformation of European operations. He also served as CEO of HSBC Mexico and Regional Head of Retail Banking in Latin America.
Strategic Vision for ANZ
ANZ’s position is particularly noteworthy, with Matos inheriting “a unique competitive position with two scale domestic markets, a leading Institutional banking franchise, and two world-class platforms in ANZ Plus and ANZ Transactive.”
His appointment is strategically significant as the bank prepares for major initiatives, including the migration of customers from Suncorp Bank to ANZ Plus, with a particular focus on non-financial risk management. The bank’s board has expressed confidence that this leadership transition will ensure ANZ continues to deliver value for its customers, shareholders, and staff in the coming years.
Leadership Transition
The current CEO, Shayne Elliott, will remain in his position until May 11 and will continue to assist with transition responsibilities until September 30, ensuring a smooth handover of leadership.
As the transition approaches, Matos has expressed his enthusiasm about relocating to Melbourne to lead the next phase of ANZ’s evolution.
