Bali Grapples with Severe Flooding: Multiple Districts Affected as Heavy Rains Continue

Unprecedented Flooding Strikes Bali

Heavy rainfall that began on Tuesday night (September 9, 2025) has led to severe flooding in Bali, causing widespread disruption across the island. West Denpasar is among the worst-hit areas, with residential areas, businesses, and infrastructure submerged.

Extent of Impact

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported extreme rainfall of up to 150 mm across most regions of Bali on September 9-10, 2025. The heavy rain has affected multiple regions including Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar, Klungkung, and Karangasem districts, as well as Denpasar City.

Several factors have contributed to the flooding, including the high intensity of rainfall, accumulation of rubbish, the impact of large-scale development projects, and waterways unable to cope with the excess water.

Infrastructure Disruption and Emergency Response

The flooding has severely disrupted the main road connecting Denpasar to the port town of Gilimanuk, resulting in severe traffic congestion. The Bali Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reports that the floods have caused trees to fall in the districts of Tabanan and Karangasem, damaging power lines and blocking several roads.

BPBD Head I Nyoman Sidakarya has encouraged residents to evacuate themselves first, as the agency is overwhelmed by the scale of the flooding caused by the 24-hour-long downpour in almost all areas of the island.

Outlook and Warnings

According to BMKG’s Region III Office Head Cahyo Nugroho, light to medium rain is expected to continue in most areas of Bali for the next three days. The Bali BPBD has issued warnings for the public to be aware of hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, flash floods, landslides, and fallen trees, due to the extreme weather.
