Major Fire Incident at Popular Perth Shopping Hub

A significant fire has devastated the Morley Market centre in Perth’s north-east, with authorities confirming the blaze was deliberately set. The incident began around 12:30 AM at the bustling market located at the intersection of Bishop and Progress streets.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Response

Over 120 firefighters battled the massive blaze, which tore through the entire 5,000 square metre structure, causing the roof to collapse. Every business within the market has been impacted.

Andre Duckworth, the incident controller for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, reported that nearly every business within the market has suffered damage. He emphasized the serious impact on local businesses, many of which have been family-run for generations, noting, “Every business in the market building has been impacted to some extent”.

Community Impact and Response

The market, which has served as a community hub for decades, housed dozens of food and retail outlets, many of them family-run. In response to the disaster, at least one shop owner has initiated an online fundraising campaign aimed at aiding those affected in their rebuilding efforts.

Safety Measures and Ongoing Investigation

Residents have been advised to exercise caution and are urged to avoid the vicinity. Duckworth has reassured the public that while smoke is present, it has been adequately diluted, stating that while every structure fire produces different compounds, the smoke has been sufficiently diluted by the time it reaches homes or businesses.

The arson squad and police are currently investigating the incident, as the community grapples with the loss of this significant local landmark.
