Allianz Stadium, the $828 million sporting venue that opened in August 2022, will undergo a 10-week closure due to persistent criticism over its drainage and turf conditions in the past year.

Infrastructure Issues and Impact

An independent review committee discovered that contaminated sand was fitted during construction, with clay and silt levels exceeding three times the recommended maximum amount in the sand drainage layer. The surface’s drainage rate is currently at 40mm per hour, significantly below the average rate for sand-based sports pitches.

The closure is scheduled to begin after the rugby union Test match between Australia and Argentina on September 13. The shutdown will affect several sporting organizations, including Sydney FC, which will need to relocate its home matches. The Australian Professional Leagues’ Unite Round in late November will also be impacted.
