A Historic Transformation Underway

John F. Kennedy International Airport is currently undergoing a historic $19 billion transformation aimed at creating a world-class airport. This comprehensive redevelopment includes two new terminals, expansion of existing facilities, streamlined roadways, enhanced dining options, and stunning New York artwork.

Economic Impact and Significance

As the nation’s busiest airport for international travel, JFK plays a crucial role in global transportation and the region’s economy. The airport serves over 62 million passengers annually, supports 149,000 jobs, and generates more than $33 billion in sales and $14 billion in wages, making it an essential component of the world’s air transportation system.

New Terminal 1: A Gateway to the Future

The centerpiece of the renovation is the new Terminal 1, which will be equivalent in size to LaGuardia Airport’s two new terminals combined. The facility will feature cutting-edge technology, including its own microgrid with solar panels, ensuring 100% operational capability even during power disruptions.

Cultural Integration and Art

The new Terminal 6, valued at $4.2 billion, will showcase a mini New York arts district featuring installations from four prestigious institutions: the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The terminal will also include installations from 19 contemporary artists, representing a $22 million investment in partnership with the Public Art Fund.

Timeline and Completion

The first phase of Terminal 1 is scheduled to open in mid-2026, featuring departure and arrival areas along with the first 14 gates capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft for long-haul flights. The terminal will initially handle 14 million passengers annually. Upon full completion, it will feature 23 gates – 22 wide-body gates and one narrow-body gate – scheduled for 2030.

Enhanced Customer Experience

The completed Terminal 1 will offer over 300,000 square feet of dining, retail, lounge, and recreational space. A unique feature will be the cash-and-carry duty-free shopping system, allowing customers to take their purchases immediately rather than collecting them before boarding.
