Record-Breaking Performance and Growth

Sydney Airport has achieved a remarkable milestone in Q1 2025, recording its highest quarterly international traffic ever with 4.32 million international passengers, representing a 3.9 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The airport handled a total of 10.4 million passengers in Q1 2025, showing a 0.8 percent increase from Q1 2024. The domestic and regional traffic saw 6.08 million passengers moving through T2 and T3 terminals, though this represented a slight decline of 1.3 percent compared to the previous year.

Major Infrastructure Developments

The T1 International terminal is undergoing significant upgrades, with nine out of 15 new security lanes now featuring advanced CT scanner technology. Once completed, this upgrade will increase screening capacity by nearly 30 percent, allowing passengers to keep laptops, liquids, and aerosols in their carry-on bags.

A $200 million Terminal 2 redevelopment is currently in progress, with new CT security scanners scheduled for installation by November 2025. The improvements include self-service check-in kiosks and advanced bag drop systems. This upgrade aims to streamline the passenger journey, enabling travelers to move from kerb to gate in as little as 15 minutes.

Operational Excellence and Future Outlook

The airport has demonstrated strong operational performance, with 99.7 percent of international passengers and 99.4 percent of domestic passengers clearing security in under 10 minutes. Immigration processing has improved, with 90 percent of passengers clearing within 34 minutes, marking a 15 percent improvement from Q2 2024. On-time performance has also improved for both domestic and international flights, with increases of 3 percent and over 5 percent respectively.

The airport continues to expand its international connections, with Turkish Airlines recently launching operations offering 4 weekly flights to Istanbul via Kuala Lumpur, set to increase to 5 weekly flights from June 2025.
