Devastating Floods Strike Indonesian Paradise

Bali has been struck by unusual and deadly flooding as heavy rains inundate the region, with flash floods and landslides affecting two provinces in Indonesia, resulting in at least 14 deaths, six missing persons, and impacting approximately 600 people.

Unprecedented Scale of Disaster

Local residents report that this flooding is unprecedented, with many stating they have never before experienced such heavy rainfall in their lifetime on the island. The Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded extreme rainfall of up to 150 mm across most regions of Bali, with warnings that the rain is expected to continue throughout the week.

Widespread Impact and Emergency Response

The heavy rains have caused significant flooding across five cities in Bali, including Denpasar, with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency confirming that flash floods have hit Denpasar city, Jembrana district, Gianyar district, and Tabanan district. Nearly 200 people have been forced to evacuate to schools and mosques due to flooded homes.

Infrastructure and Tourism Disruption

Access to the island’s international airport near Denpasar has been severely limited, with only trucks able to use the roads. The situation has been exacerbated by rubbish-blocked drains, which have transformed small creeks and channels into raging torrents, leading to building collapses and traffic gridlock.

Climate Change Connection

While the annual monsoon season typically occurs between November and April, climate change has significantly affected storm patterns, including the length and severity of the season. This has resulted in heavier rain, flash flooding, and stronger wind gusts.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The National Search and Rescue Agency has deployed teams using rubber boats to assist children and older people who have been forced onto the roofs of flooded homes and buildings. The severe flooding has affected thousands of homes and buildings in both residential areas and tourist locations.
