National Day of Remembrance

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum leads the nation, and the world, in marking the anniversary of the day that changed our lives forever. As communities come together to honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the commitment to remembering the sacrifice and showing gratitude for the courage displayed during and after 9/11 remains strong 24 years later.

Official Commemoration in New York City

The official ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. on September 11, 2025, with a citywide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the north tower. The commemoration is expected to conclude at approximately 1 p.m.

Family members of the victims will gather to read aloud the names of those killed in the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Throughout the ceremony, six moments of silence will be observed, marking when each tower was struck and fell, the Pentagon attack, and the crash of Flight 93.

Tribute in Light

As night falls, 88 7,000-watt xenon lightbulbs assembled in two 48-foot squares will illuminate the sky, echoing the shape and orientation of the original Twin Towers. These powerful beams will be visible from a 60-mile radius from dusk on September 11 to dawn on September 12.

National Impact and Community Response

According to Beth Hillman, President & CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, “Tribute in Light is an iconic part of the commemoration of the nearly 3000 people who were killed on 9/11.” With 100 million Americans too young to remember 9/11, the memorial serves to bring awareness and inspire people to learn more about that day.

Throughout the year, regular tributes, ceremonies, and special events are held on the Memorial and in the Museum, including weekly bagpipe tributes honoring both those who died on 9/11 and those who have died from exposure to toxins in the aftermath.
