Transformative Changes at BBC Sport

BBC Sport is undergoing a major restructuring led by director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski, with 27 roles being cut and 27 new positions created. The staff were informed of these changes shortly before a meeting at Gary Neville’s Hotel Football.

One of the most significant changes involves the flagship programme Match of the Day, as Gary Lineker is set to leave at the end of the current season, though he will continue working with the broadcaster until the 2026 World Cup. From next season, the presenting duties will be shared between Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan – marking the first time the programme will have three regular presenters.

Enhanced Sports Coverage

In March 2025, BBC Sport strengthened its position in motorsport by securing exclusive audio rights for Formula One coverage, with a new deal extending through the 2025-2027 period on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

The broadcaster has also enhanced its snooker coverage, with Sunset+Vine’s Scotland and London teams producing the 2025 World Championship at The Crucible Theatre. The tournament, running from April 19 to May 5, is being produced for both BBC Sport and Channel 5, marking the first year of a three-year deal with the BBC.

Digital Innovation and Viewer Experience

BBC Sport continues to evolve its digital presence, offering comprehensive coverage across football, cricket, rugby, tennis, F1, and more through its mobile app. The platform has become particularly valuable for time-constrained viewers, allowing them to monitor games, access detailed reports, and stay informed about major sports events across multiple disciplines.

Looking ahead, BBC Sport is implementing subtle but significant improvements to its production techniques and viewer experience. The focus is on expanding airtime and enhancing coverage, ensuring that viewers can access comprehensive content across all BBC’s multichannels, including BBC 1, 2, 4, and iPlayer website.
