A Musical Pioneer’s Final Journey

Rick Davies, the Supertramp co-founder who sang and wrote some of the group’s most popular songs, has died at age 81. He passed away at his home on Long Island following numerous disputes and creative differences.

Born in Swindon, England, on July 22, 1944, Davies discovered music early in life. Initially inspired by drumming, he later found his true calling in keyboards. His first notable group, Rick’s Blues, featured a young Gilbert O’Sullivan—later famous for ‘Alone Again, Naturally’—on drums, with O’Sullivan crediting Davies as an early mentor.

The Supertramp Legacy

As the founder, vocalist and keyboardist of Supertramp, Davies composed some of the band’s most memorable hits, including ‘Rudy’, ‘Bloody Well Right’, ‘Crime of the Century’, ‘Goodbye Stranger’, and many others.

The band reached its commercial peak with ‘Breakfast in America’, which became 1979’s top-selling album in the U.S., maintaining the number one position on the Billboard chart for six weeks that spring. The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year, ultimately losing to Billy Joel’s ’52nd Street’.

Final Years and Musical Journey

After Roger Hodgson’s departure, Davies kept Supertramp alive through several albums, including ‘Brother Where You Bound’ (1985), ‘Free as a Bird’ (1987), ‘Some Things Never Change’ (1997), and ‘Slow Motion’ (2002). Though none matched the massive sales of ‘Breakfast in America’, Davies maintained a dedicated following, with his gruff baritone voice and rhythmic, jazz-influenced piano giving Supertramp its ongoing identity.

In 2015, Davies was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, forcing Supertramp to cancel a planned tour. However, he fought the illness with resilience, returning to live performance in 2022. Despite his health challenges, his commitment to music never wavered.

Beyond the stage, Davies was known for his warmth, resilience, and devotion to his wife Sue, with whom he shared over five decades. His music and legacy continue to inspire many and bears testament to the fact that great songs never die, they live on.
