R U OK? Day, a profound national awareness day in Australia, is more than just a date on the calendar – it’s a movement that inspires individuals to reach out to their friends, family, and colleagues with a simple yet transformative question: “R U OK?” This initiative aims to ignite meaningful conversations, dismantle barriers, and cultivate a culture of empathy and connection.

The 2025 event will take place on Thursday, 11 September 2025, maintaining its traditional timing on the second Thursday of September.

The Growing Impact of Mental Health Awareness

The significance of this initiative cannot be understated, as suicide remains the third leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds. In Australia alone, approximately eight people take their lives every day, with an estimated 65,000 people attempting suicide annually. The impact reaches far into communities, with over 50% of Australians knowing someone who has died by suicide.

As awareness of mental health challenges grows, so does the need for practical, evidence-based training that equips people to respond with confidence and care. The rising incidence of suicide and psychological distress has prompted increased interest in mental health courses across workplaces, community organisations, and care settings. Research has shown that individuals exposed to the R U OK? campaign are up to six times more likely to reach out to someone experiencing personal difficulties, compared to those not exposed to the campaign. An overwhelming majority (90%) of people who are regularly asked R U OK? report feeling more supported, connected and cared about.
