Cooper Bai, an Australian rugby league footballer who plays as a lock for the Gold Coast Titans in the National Rugby League, was born on the Gold Coast, Queensland and has Papua New Guinean heritage. His father, Marcus, is a former Papua New Guinean international who achieved premiership success with the Melbourne Storm in 1999.

Rising Through the Ranks

Bai’s journey began with the Burleigh Bears, where he played his junior rugby league while attending Marymount College. In 2023, he represented Queensland City Under-17 while playing in the Mal Meninga Cup. His progression continued when he joined the Titans’ NRL squad on a development contract for the 2025 season. His talent was evident when he started at lock and scored a try in Queensland Under-19’s victory over New South Wales, followed by his Queensland Cup debut for the Tweed Seagulls.

Historic NRL Debut

In a significant milestone, Bai has been named on the interchange for the Titans in their upcoming match against Wests Tigers. The announcement came after an emotional phone call with his famous father on Tuesday. Titans elite pathways coach Matt Keating praised Bai’s dedication, noting his eagerness to work with coaches has significantly enhanced his performance. For Bai, this debut represents more than a personal achievement; it’s about honoring his family and representing Papua New Guinea.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Kumuls coach Jason Demetriou has indicated that Bai is under consideration for the Pacific Championships, noting his impressive performance in the Queensland Cup. The timing is particularly significant as the Kumuls prepare for the upcoming Pacific Championships and 2026 World Cup, which will be played in Australia and Papua New Guinea, leading up to PNG’s entry into the NRL in 2028.
