The Stage is Set for Tennis’s Greatest Show

The third and oldest tennis Grand Slam of the year, and the only one played on grass, will once again welcome thousands of visitors to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in southwest London. The 138th edition of the Championships marks a historic milestone as it becomes the first Wimbledon tournament to fully implement automated electronic line judges, replacing traditional line officials.

Tournament Details and Innovation

The tournament will run from June 30 through July 13, with qualifying rounds taking place from June 23-26. The main draw action begins on Monday, June 30, with play starting at 11 a.m. on outside courts and 1:30 p.m. on Centre Court. In a significant schedule change, both women’s and men’s singles finals will start at 4:00 PM instead of the traditional 2:00 PM, a move designed to enhance viewership in North and South America.

Prize Money and Competitors

The winners of Wimbledon 2025 will receive £3,000,000 each, representing an 11.1 percent increase from last year’s prize money. This converts to approximately $4,092,600. The total prize money for the 2025 Championships amounts to £53,550,000, a 7.0% increase from 2024.

Star-Studded Field

Carlos Alcaraz enters as the favourite to defend his title, particularly after his French Open victory and success at Queen’s Club Championship. World number one Jannik Sinner, who has demonstrated remarkable form by winning two of the last three Slams, stands as Alcaraz’s main challenger. In the women’s draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka, who has dominated the rankings since October 2024 and appeared in the finals of the last three Grand Slams, will be seeking to add a Wimbledon title to her impressive collection of Australian and US Open victories from 2024.

Traditional Charm Meets Modern Innovation

While the tournament embraces technological advancement with electronic line calling, the 80 former line judges will remain employed as match assistants, with two officials on each court supporting the umpire and providing backup should the electronic system fail. The tournament’s beloved traditions continue, including its famous strawberries and cream, with organisers preparing 28,000kg of specially grown strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream for the fortnight.
