Modern Transit Hub Takes Shape

Edgecliff Station has completed a comprehensive upgrade focused on accessibility and user-friendliness, featuring new lifts to access train platforms and bus interchange, escalator replacements, improved pedestrian access, and safety features. The improvements include a new kiss and ride zone, bus shelter, and bike racks.

Major Housing Development Plans

The Minns Labor Government has announced ambitious plans to unlock up to 10,000 new homes through rezoning around Woollahra and Edgecliff stations, positioning the area as a key solution to Sydney’s housing crisis.

The development comes as recent NSW Productivity Commission reports highlight concerning trends, with Sydney losing twice as many young people as it gains. Notably, while Greater Sydney has grown by 74 percent over the past 50 years, Woollahra’s population has declined by 11 percent.

Strategic Urban Planning

The development plans include buildings up to 26 storeys (86 metres) near the station, with a focus on commercial floor space along New South Head Road. The strategy emphasizes residential use on higher levels.

Public space improvements are central to the plan, including a new linear park along New South Head Road, a public plaza at the Edgecliff Centre site, and rooftop public open space above the bus interchange. The strategy promotes active transport, car sharing, and reduced car parking.

Transport and Infrastructure Capacity

The station area boasts excellent access to major green spaces including Cooper, Trumper, Rushcutters Bay and Centennial Parks. The Eastern Suburbs train line currently operates at only 43% capacity during AM peak hours, with significant room for growth. The area also has capacity for additional students in public schools.

Infrastructure assessments by Sydney Water and Infrastructure NSW confirm that existing water and wastewater systems can accommodate the proposed 10,000 dwellings without major upgrades.
